Vale of Glamorgan – A surfer’s paradise in Wales!

With the Glamorgan Heritage Coast facing westwards to the Atlantic, it can often be a target for severe south-westerly winds and as a result many shipwrecks have occurred in this area. However, the conditions are ideal for surfers and there are beaches that cater for the various levels of ability.

The yellow-grey cliffs, which are unique on the Celtic Sea coastline, are believed to have been formed 200 million years ago (at the beginning of the Jurassic age) whenWaleslay underneath a warm, shallow, equatorial sea.

The Vale of Glamorgan is very much an agricultural area, but very low-lying, with the highest point only being 137 metres above sea level.

Reasons to visit the Vale of Glamorgan

The borough has many towns and villages and is a popular place for tourists. Barry Island Pleasure Park attracts many visitors and has more than 30 different rides, including the “Log Flume” (the most popular ride). It has many of the usual attractions seen at pleasure parks and several amusement arcades. Entrance to the Park is free and it is open from Easter until the first week in September.

If you like medieval castles, you may enjoy visiting St Donat’s Castle which overlooks the Bristol Channel in the village of St Donat’s. The earliest parts of the castle were built in the 12th century, but it has seen many changes in the centuries that followed.

Still on a medieval theme, is the Cosmeston Medieval Village, which is a recreation of 14th century peasant life in Wales during the Middle Ages. It is located near Lavernock. Whilst in the area, you could also visit Cosmeston Lakes Country Park. At the centre of the Park is a large lake (populated by a wide range of water fowl, including swans) and there are picnic benches and plenty of parking spaces.
