Powys – The largest county in Wales
Powys covers a number of historic counties and an area of 5,179 km², which makes it the largest county in Wales by land area. Most of Powys is mountainous and this makes it difficult to travel north-south by car.
Powys was named after the older Kingdom of Powys, which occupied much of the northern area, but this ended when it was occupied by Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in the middle of the 13th century.
The Battle of Bryn Glas took place in 1402, near the towns of Knighton and Presteigne in Powys, which is recorded as a great victory for the Welsh rebels under Owain Glynd?r.
Reasons to visit Powys
Apart from the mountains, there are many caves, lakes, reservoirs and waterfalls. There are 6 castles to view and plenty of museums.
Other interests include the Brecon Beacons, Radnor forest, the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, and a Brecon Roman fort. There are some great places to walk, such as Offa’s Dyke Path and Glynd?r’s Way, to name just two.
You may also consider visiting the smallest town in Britain, Llanwrtyd Wells, which apparently provides some unusual entertainment, like bog snorkelling for example. It also attracts mountain bikers, walkers and bird watchers.
Entertainment and Dining in Powys
Powys offers the usual supply of theatres, cinemas and nightclubs, and a good selection of restaurants such as Ravells which specialise in British cuisine or the Upper Rectory Restaurant that offers modern French and European dishes. You can also find restaurants providing Thai, Indian, Bangladeshi, Welsh, Italian, Chinese, Mexican and International food. There are also many takeaways and fish and chip shops.
Accommodation in Powys
Accommodation is available at all levels in Powys. You can choose to stay in a 5 star Country House such as Lake Vyrnwy Hotel & Spa or a converted 16th century farm building like the Bailea Cottages. There are holiday cottages and camping sites (that offer static caravans, touring and tent pitches) and of course many guest houses or places that provide Bed and Breakfast.
