Newport – Bridges into Wales

Newport’s origins go back to the Bronze Age, when fishermen settled around the River Usk. In 75 AD the Romans built a fort at Caerleon to defend the river crossing.

Towards the end of the 11th century the Normans arrived and built Newport Castle, which was just one of the castles forcibly taken during the Welsh Revolt in 1402.

Oliver Cromwell’s troops camped overnight on Christchurch Hill during the English Civil War in 1648, before attacking the castle the next day.

There are nine bridges in Newport that cross the River Usk, including The Transporter Bridge which was built in 1906, one of only eight worldwide that exist with this concept.

Newport was granted city status in 2002 to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
