Merthyr Tydfil – The Town the Romans helped to Develop!

Records indicate that people started living in Merthyr Tydfil around 1000 BC (The Celts). Although others visited the area, it wasn’t until the arrival of the Romans that any real development occurred. The Romans built an auxiliary fortress at Penydarren and whilst their presence was strongly resisted initially, trade between the two developed later.

After the departure of the Romans, the area saw an influx of Saxons, followed by the Normans around the 11th century. Yet, a permanent settlement in Merthyr Tydfil did not really appear until the latter part of the Middle Ages. During the peak of its industrial period, Merthyr Tydfil was one of the most populated towns in Wales.

One of Merthyr Tydfil’s more unusual claims to fame was the accidental discovery, while testing a new treatment for angina, of the drug’s ability to produce an interesting side effect to enhance blood circulation.
