Flintshire – Gives you wings (for the Airbus)

Flintshire is a relatively small but industrious county in north-east Wales and has some major manufacturing industries. These include a Toyota plant that manufactures engines, a steelworks, Shotton Paper and Airbus, where it makes the wings for the A330 and the A380. Apparently, the motto at the Airbus factory in Flintshire is “Without us, it’s just a bus” but it could so easily use the phrase more famous for a certain energy drink.

Flintshire, like other Welsh counties, had earlier civilisations, but did not really become established until 1284, seven years after King Edward I ordered work to begin on Flint Castle, and about the same time he defeated Llewelyn in the wars between England and Wales.

Reasons to visit Flintshire

The 13th century Flint Castle is worth a visit and much of it is still intact (admission is free). Caergwrle Castle was built slightly earlier by Dafydd a Graffydd and King Edward I rebuilt the ruined castle later. Unfortunately, damage caused by fire resulted in it being abandoned shortly afterwards. Ewloe castle, built by Llywelyn ap Gruffyd in 1257, was taken by Edward I during the Welsh War, but also abandoned after 1284.

Other places of interest include the Moel Famau and Loggerheads Country Parks, St Winefride’s Well and Chapel, Greenfield Valley Heritage Park and Basingwerk Abbey (a country park with woodlands, reservoirs and ancient monuments), Mold Library, Museum and Gallery (traces the history of Mold), Buckley Museum (telling the story of Buckley’s place as a major centre for the pottery and brick industries from medieval times)

Entertainment and Dining in Flintshire

As you would expect there are plenty of pubs and restaurants. The 56 High Street restaurant serves seafood and is located in Mold. The Stables Bar Restaurant in Northop dates back to 1714 and offers a British and European cuisine.

For entertainment there is the Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold, which provides classical productions, musicals, comedy and has a cinema.
