West Lothian– Birthplace to Mary, Queen of Scots, The Doctor and Susan Boyle
The West Lothian District was created in 1975 and the council area in 1996. Prior to 1921 the county of West Lothian was called Linlithgowshire (or the County of Linlithgow)
Linlithgow Palace is the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots (also known as Mary Stuart and Mary I of Scotland). She was crowned before reaching her first birthday, following the death of her father (James V of Scotland), but was executed in 1587 (at the age of 44) for her alleged involvement in plots to assassinate Elizabeth I.
West Lothian is also the birthplace to David Tennant, who played the tenth Doctor in the TV series “Doctor Who” and Susan Boyle who rose to fame following her appearance on “Britain’s Got Talent”.
Reasons to visit West Lothian
Beecraigs is a country park located on the hills above Bathgate and Linlithgow and provides excellent views of the surrounding countryside. The park consists of upland forest, woodland and open country, and offers outdoor pursuits, camping, a deer farm, fishery and hilltop restaurant.
Blackness Castle was built in the 15th century and can be found near the village of Blackness on the south shore of the Firth of Forth. In 1650 it fell to Oliver Cromwell’s army, but has had a number of repairs and additions made since this time.
Cairnpapple Hill has been used as a ritual site for around 4,000 years and worth adding to your list of places to visit.
The ruins of Linlithgow Palace have “Royal” historic value and it was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Other places of interest include Polkemmet Country Parkand Torphichen Preceptory.
