Roxburghshire – Town destroyed, but the county lives on

Roxburghshire is a county in the south east of Scotland and borders Dumfries, Selkirk and Berwick, and the English counties of Cumbria and Northumberland.

Roxburgh was an important trading burgh in the past, and during the Middle Ages was equal to Edinburgh, Stirling and Perth in importance. This was mainly due to very fertile areas of land, its position upon the River Tweed (for transporting goods) and its position as a military defence.

During the Scottish Wars of Independence Roxburgh changed hands many times (between the Scots and English), but on the last occasion the town and castle were destroyed (1460). All that remains of the town are some ruined segments of castle ramparts. A small village located near the site of the old town now has its name.
