Nairnshire – A golfer’s paradise!

Nairnshire, also known as Nairn, is a small county in the northwest of Scotland.

There are many of the usual historical attractions in Nairnshire, but it is safe to say there are more golf courses than castles.

Reasons to visit Nairnshire

Nairn itself has been described as “an attractive seaside town” located on the Moray Firth coast, which is inhabited by just 11,000 people.

In addition to sandy beaches and riverside walks, there are two 18 hole championship courses, which are the Nairn Golf Club and Nairn Dunbar Golf Club. However, if these don’t satisfy your golfing tastes, there are 40 other golf courses within a 60 mile radius of Nairn, so there is no excuse for not getting some practice on your swing!

If it’s history you want to see, then Cawdor Castle should be on your list of places to visit. The castle was built more than 600 years ago and is often associated with Shakespeare’s Macbeth, even though the castle appeared some 200 years later. The castle has a drawbridge and fortified walls, and the grounds include beautiful gardens, nature trails, a putting green (more golf!), refreshment areas, a restaurant and a number of shops.

Nairn Museum has been collecting items from the local area and overseas since 1858, which include equipment used by fishermen, weapons, fossils and prehistoric tools.

The RSPB Culbin Sands is a reserve that is suitable for all ages and has one of the largest shingle and sand dune bars in Britain. You should be able to spot a number of seabirds in this area, including Brent geese.

Entertainment and Dining in Nairnshire

Nightlife is a little limited in Nairnshire, as are the restaurants outside of the hotels. However, you may care to try the restaurant at Cawdor House, The Boath House (offering a six course, daily changing menu), or maybe The Old Kirk (built in 1856)

Accommodation in Nairnshire

There are a few self catering apartments, Guest Houses and B&Bs, and a reasonable selection of hotels like The Best Western Windsor Hotel, or the Golf View Hotel and Spa.
