Midlothian – The Battle of Roslin
Midlothian is a small county in the east of Scotland, located just a few miles south of the capital Edinburgh.
The area is famous for the “Battle of Roslin”, which took place in 1303. However, the actual details of the battle are somewhat vague, especially in respect of the numbers involved.
Some accounts claim that 8,000 Scots took on 30,000 English soldiers, but there is little evidence to support this. Records seem to support a “clash” between the armies of “relatively modest forces”, which was more typical of that time, and in winter. Evidence does seem to show that two or three separate actions did take place around this date, which resulted in a clear victory for the Scots.
Reasons to visit Midlothian
There are plenty of places to go and things to see in Midlothian, such as the 15th century Rosslyn Chapel, famous for the beauty of its carvings. The Scottish Mining Museum was recently voted Scotland’s Most Treasured Place, offering the story of coal for Scotland.
If you fancy going up, up and away in a beautiful balloon, then Alba Ballooning can help you to achieve that with hot air balloon flights, which take you close to Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.
What trip to a Scottish county would be complete without a visit to a castle? Crichton Castle overlooks the River Tyne and was built around the late 14th century.
Other places of interest include: Arniston House, the Bonnyrigg Leisure Centre, Dalkeith Country Park, Midlothian Ski Centre (Europe’s longest and most challenging artificial ski slope), Pentland Hills Regional Park, Roslin Glen Country Park and Vogrie Country Park.
Entertainment and Dining in Midlothian
Much of the night entertainment revolves around pubs and snooker halls, so you may want to travel to Edinburgh for theatres etc. There is of course a much wider selection of restaurants inEdinburghas well, but you could try the Cavaliere Restaurant or Caruso’s in Dalkeith.
Accommodation in Midlothian
There is a reasonable selection of accommodation in Midlothian, including Guest Houses, B&Bs, Self Catering apartments and Hotels, like The Retreat Castle Hotel in Bonnyrigg and The Roslin Glen Hotel in Roslin.
