Caithness, Scotland- Dig Up Some Fun

Caithness is the northernmost county in mainland Scotland and spans a distance of only 50 kilometres in all directions. Because the area is predominately flat, the 706 metre tall Morven Mountain can be easily seen throughout the county. This flatland has become home to much farmland as people settled into the area over the years. That does not detract from the coastal beauty that lies on the shores. The North Sea and Pentland Firth boast many rare mammals, fish and birds. However, even with the beautiful landscape that covers the county, it is the history that makes it well known. Home to many historic dwellings and landmarks, Caithness is a hot spot for archaeological digs as well.

Reasons to Visit Caithness

Without plenty of time you will fall short on being able to experience all that the county has to offer. From historic buildings, cairns, stone circles and castles like the Castle of Mey to a number of archaeological sites; Caithness has plenty to offer for any interest level. Typical holiday activities like swimming, tennis and bowling are also available. Another interesting landmark to visit is the Dounreay. This was the first nuclear power station in the UK. Spend time fishing for trout or simply relaxing and watching the sea.

Entertainment and Dining in Caithness

Like much of Scotland there is no shortage of pubs and clubs. You will find them busiest on the weekends, but any night is a good night to pay them a visit. For a traditional Scottish dinner you can head over to the Crannag Bistro in Bonar Bridge where you can get an evening meal for two or the entire family. La Mirage Restaurant serves British cuisine and is open for lunch and dinner.

Accommodation in Caithness

Stay near the St Ola car ferry when you choose to spend your holiday at Ferry Inn Hotel in Thurso. For more quaint accommodations there are a variety of bed and breakfasts like the Bayview B&B in Wick. The independent traveller may take advantage of the local hostels and there is caravan camping for those who prefer it.
