Down, Northern Ireland- Adventures on the Coast

County Down lies northeast of the island of Ireland and sits on the southeast shore of the Lough Neagh. With the Irish Sea to both the east and the south and a number of other bodies of water, Down boasts ample coastline to offer scores of adventures for residents and guests. That doesn’t mean that water activity is the only thing you have to choose from. With the Mounne Mountains as a part of the landscape you are given more choices about your outdoor activities. The history of the county can be relived through visits to the many historical structures that still exist. Even with all there is to do in Down, that is not the biggest claim to fame. The county was the home of Patrick Bronte and houses Ireland’s first protestant church. It also has one of the top rugby clubs.

Reasons to Visit Down

The adventurer in you will love the many sports you can find to take part in. Whether you want to try your hand at angling or are looking for a bigger adventure there is something in the county that will suit your needs. Tollymore and Bryansford offer canoeing, hill walking and Ireland’s only mountain boarding facility. You could spend days locating and admiring the many castles and historic structures that still exist. From 18th century Castle Ward to the St Patricks church, there is plenty to see and do that will satisfy your thirst for historical knowledge. You can visit any of the local museums to learn about the area or just spend a day shopping somewhere like The Quays Shopping Centre.

Entertainment and Dining in Down

Get the best of both worlds when you have home cooked food and nightlife in one place. The Bannville House Restaurant, Bar and Nightclub does just that. The Saltwater Brig is another pub that has been open since 1765.

Spend some time at the foot of the Mourne Mountains and choose the Oakleigh House Bed and Breakfast for your next stay. A short distance from the seaside town of New Castle allows you easy access regardless of which adventure you choose to try.
