Donegal, Ireland- Up Here It’s Different
Donegal stands out, but not because it is the fourth largest county in Ireland. Unlike the other Irish counties, Donegal only borders one county in the Republic. The remaining borders are with the Northern Ireland. While this may have set them apart, they have embraced it and that led to their slogan, “Up here it’s different.” The majority of Donegal is rough and full of mountains. The coastline contains an indent that has created two major loughs, Swilly and Foyle. The land is often favoured by guests on holiday simply because the beaches are never busy and the sea cliffs are so high. With two sets of mountains that are often referred to as the Hills of Donegal, there is plenty to explore and see for everyone on holiday with you.
Reasons to Visit Donegal
Such an expansive coastline leaves visitors with the ability to take part in a number of water sports. Surfing, diving and swimming are all possible and found enjoyable by those on holiday. With the mountains in the distance there is plenty of wilderness for you to explore as you want to. The Glenveagh National Park is one of Donegal’s top tourist attractions and features lakes, gardens, glens and mountains. There is plenty of deer available and you may even find some wild golden eagles. Spend some time viewing historic sites such as Hells Hole in Makin Head and the Donegal Castle where the 15th century structure was built on the River Eske.
Entertainment and Dining in Donegal
A visit to Donegal is not complete with stopping by Leo’s Tavern and seeing the birthplace of Enya. Located in the rural village of Meenaleck, this tavern saw many stars begin their career. When food is preferred, then you can head over to restaurants like the Bastille Bistro and take advantage of their authentic French menu anytime.
Accommodation in Donegal
There are many luxurious hotels like the Abbey Hotel and Harvey’s Point Hotel, but you have other alternatives as well. You will easily find a home with your budget. Bed and breakfasts, guest houses and self-catering lodges are all a great way to enjoy your stay.
