It is no surprise to locals that Roscommon is a popular destination simply for its many bodies of water. Bordered on the east by the River Shannon, the west by the River Such, the north by Lough Key, Lough Gara and Lough Boderg and Lough Ree on the east; Roscommon is a great getaway for those who like water sports and adventures. Visitors find spending time on the water in a boat or simply angling to be a great way to spend the day. Even though Roscommon is not a specific tourist destination, with the water available and the many historical landmarks that stand in the county it does have appeal.

The water is a predominant reason that many people opt to visit the area. The many rivers and Loughs offer plenty of opportunity for fishing, boating and water sports to both locals and visitors. Even with the appeal of the water, there is much else to see and do throughout the county. See a 13th century castle when you visit Roscommon Castle. While it is in ruins, many people are still attracted to the historic nature of the visit. The Castle Strange has scribed stones that date back as far as 500BC. Once you have toured the historic sites you can relax and get in touch with nature at the Lough Key Forest Park. Bridges, canals, walks, trails and a bog garden await your exploration.
