Laois, Ireland- The Most Landlocked County in Ireland

There are many counties in Ireland that do not border the coast, but most of them border another county that does. Laois is the one county that borders no other county on the coast. This has earned it the nickname of the most landlocked county in Ireland. Even with that distinction, there is much more to Laois than its lack of coastline. With more than 1,000 historical sites that cover a time period of 8,500 years the history throughout the county is strong. Full of heritage towns and structures, this small county in the middle of the country is often overlooked by tourists visiting Ireland.

Reasons to Visit Laois

There are so many historical sites that it would be impossible to visit them all during one trip. Some of the most notable include the Abbeyleix Heritage House that details the history of the county and takes visitors through the times in the past and the Lea Castle where the remnants of the 1260 castle remains. You might also enjoy the Ballaghmore Castle that was constructed in 1480. Naming the entire 1000 historical sites would be impossible, but that is not all that Laois has to offer. You can engage in hillwalking and cycling through the mountains or try your hand at angling on the rivers.

Entertainment and Dining in Laois

Each summer Laois is home to the Electric Picnic Arts and Music Festival that is held at the Stradbally Hall Estate. During a normal day you can experience music and fun at the Eamon A Chnoic old style bar. Dine in style at a variety of restaurants like the Sal Oriens steakhouse and Italian restaurant in the Heritage Hotel.

Accommodation in Laois

If self-catering lodges are your preference then enjoy the scenic view of the Slieve Bloom Mountains when you stay at Gleannaglas Lodge. Close to tourist activities this site features a private garden and the comforts of home.
