Cork – The “Rebel County”

Cork is the second largest city in Ireland, but the locals (Corkonians) often refer to it as the real capital of Ireland, which may explain why County Cork has acquired the nickname of the “Rebel County”

Early settlers included a group of monks around the 6th century, but the area did not really start to develop until the arrival of the Vikings (early part of the 10th century), who created a trading port.

Like many towns and cities at the time, Cork was devastated by the “Black Death” in 1349 and lost almost half of its inhabitants.

Reasons to visit Cork

The Arts play a strong role in the county, including music, theatre, dance, film and poetry. There are also many buildings of architectural interest, but one of the few remaining structures from medieval times is the Red Abbey, which dates back to the 14th century. It obtained its name from the reddish sandstone used to build it. The bell tower is all that remains of this Augustinian abbey.

Other places of interest are the two cathedrals, St. Mary’s and St Finbarre’s, St. Patrick’s Street (the main city street), the church tower of Shandon (regarded as the symbol of the city), Elizabeth Fort and the Cork Opera House.

Train enthusiasts will also enjoy Cork, which is one of the most rail-oriented cities in Ireland.

Entertainment and Dining in Cork

There are plenty of places available for entertainment and you can watch quality productions in the theatres (Corcadorca Theatre Company for example). There are film and jazz festivals and of course opera, but almost every taste is catered for.

The same could be said for the different food on offer from the many restaurants in Cork. Restaurants you may like to try include the Riverview Restaurant at The Gresham Metropole, Innfusion Restaurant and Augustine’s at The Clarion.

Accommodation in Cork

You can find all the usual types of accommodation in Cork (Guest Houses, B&Bs, Apartments, Self Catering etc.) and there is a very good choice of hotels available that are sure to meet your budget and requirements, such as the Jurys Inn Cork, Isaac’s, Hayfield Manor Hotel and the Clarion Hotel.
