Clare – A history that dates back to 3800 BC
There is evidence that people from prehistoric times lived in the Clare area, who left behind ancient dolmen (a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb). Such tombs were popular in ancient times and many date back as far as 7000 BC (in other countries). Clare has more of these than any other area in Ireland (especially in The Burren area). The remains of people excavated from these sites have been dated to 3800 BC.
Clare is situated on the west coast of Ireland and northwest of the River Shannon.
