Cavan – The “Life of Reilly”
The O’Reilly clan played a significant role in the area from the 13th century, which included the building of a castle. During the 15th century they created a market which attracted many merchants and as their wealth grew, they issued their own currency (17th century). It was the O’Reilly clan’s immense wealth and power that is believed to be responsible for the term “Life of Reilly”
The county of Cavan borders Northern Ireland and the town is on the main road that links the north and the south. In the past, Cavan had two railway stations that linked the Great Northern Railway and Midland Great Western Railway.
