West Yorkshire shares borders with Derbyshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, and sits almost entirely on rocks of carboniferous age.
West Yorkshire is connected with a number of different industries, such as woollen mills (and the manufacturing of cloth), but is perhaps best known for coal mining. However, this industry saw a decline in the late 1980s and like many other areas has moved more towards financial industries (like banks, building societies and insurance companies).
Farming still plays a part in the county and this adds to the scenic value of the area, which also benefits from the beauty of the Pennines.
A sweet popular with adults and children alike are Pontefract Cakes, which were originally manufactured in the Yorkshire town of Pontefract. They are circular (approximately 2 cm in diameter) and made of liquorice.
There is a great deal of history available in West Yorkshire and plenty of scenery to satisfy most people. Some of the places you should add to your list of things to see include Bretton Hall (West Bretton, near Wakefield) which was built around 1720 and set in 500 acres of lakes and parkland. There are many halls worth seeing and houses like the impressive Harewood House (Harewood, near Leeds) built around 1759.
Only the ruins of Pontefract Castle now remain, but it has an interesting history as far as battles, sieges, murders and executions are concerned. There are also many museums to visit, which cover old and more recent times.
There are many places that offer entertainment, including theatres, pubs and nightclubs. As you might expect in Yorkshire, traditional food is of the highest quality, but most tastes are catered for (even Argentinian and Russian!). Restaurants include the Deeva Restaurant in Leeds (Asian food), The Clough House in Brighouse (English food) and many more.
Every type of accommodation is available (including some excellent camping areas), and hotels like the Crowne Plaza in Leeds, Leeds Marriott Hotel and the Jurys Inn in Leeds.
