West Sussex – Home to the International Bognor Birdman competition
West Sussex has a long history that dates back to the Stone Age, but significant settlements did not really develop until the arrival of the Saxons in the late 5th century. Most of the settlements in the county can be found along the coast and central areas.
Bognor Regis (originally just Bognor) became a seaside resort in the 18th century and was a popular location for King George V (for health reasons) in 1929, who agreed to allow the town to use the suffix “Regis” (of the King). The town has further developed as a resort with Butlins building a number of hotels there. A Butlin’s Holiday Camp was opened in Bognor Regis in 1960 (now known as Butlin’s Bognor Regis Resort).
It is in Bognor Regis that the International Bognor Birdman competition takes place. This is not meant to be a serious competition and involves people launching themselves off the end of a pier in human-powered ‘flying’ machines, with an award going to the person who can glide the furthest distance (which is usually not very far!)
Reasons to visit West Sussex
There are plenty of attractions in West Sussex such as the medieval Arundel Castle, which was created in the 11th century, but restored in the 18th and 19th centuries after being damaged during the English Civil War.
Goodwood House is an interesting building (some sections resemble a castle) and the grounds include Goodwood Racecourse, an airport, circuit, Golf and Country Club and hotel (among other things). There are also a number of windmills, gardens, parks and museums to visit, in addition to ancient sites and burial grounds.
