North Yorkshire – All Creatures Great and Small
Created in 1974, North Yorkshire is the largest ceremonial county in England, including most of the Yorkshire Dales, which was the setting for a popular TV series called “All creatures great and small” (based on the books by the British veterinary surgeon Alf Wight). Much of the filming took place at Bolton Castle and Askrigg, which had the fictional name of “Darrowby” in the series.
A good percentage of North Yorkshire is covered by National Parks, two of which are the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales. The highest point in the county is Whernside at 2,415 feet, which is located on the Cumbrian border.
The main industries in the region are agriculture, mineral extraction and power generation, but it is also involved in high technology and service industries, and of course tourism.
Reasons to visit North Yorkshire
There are a number of historic and scenic places to visit, such as Ampleforth College, Bolton Abbey and Bolton Castle (14th century). Although much of the castle was damaged in the English Civil War, there is still a sufficient amount remaining to enjoy.
The Brimham Rocks are interesting and stand (or should we say balance) around 30 metres high. Castle Howard is a stately home built mainly at the end of the 17th century. Duncombe Park is also a stately home, completed in 1713. There are quite a few homes like this and many Abbeys. Castles include the medieval Helmsley Castle, Middleham Castle (12th century), Richmond Castle (11th century), Scarborough Castle (a former medieval Royal fortress) and the impressive Skipton Castle.

There is a good selection of entertainment available in North Yorkshire and some excellent pubs. Eating places include The Claret in Harrogate, Humble Pie ‘n’ Mash in Whitby and Steps Steak Restaurant in Scarborough.
