London – Famous for the Tower Bridge and Big Ben
London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, has a history that goes back two thousand years (since it was founded by the Romans), although recent discoveries (of timber structures) suggest that inhabitants may have existed in the area as far back as 4500 BC.
London is one of the leading financial centres in the world, but is involved in many areas, including tourism.
By the start of the 14th century, London had an estimated population of around 100,000, but around the middle of the century was hit by the ‘Black Death’, which reduced the population by a third. A second plague hit the City in 1665–1666, which resulted in the death of up to 100,000 people, and this was followed by the Great Fire of London in 1666, which destroyed many parts of the City.
It is believed that more than 30,000 Londoners were killed during ‘The Blitz’ and the bombing by the German Luftwaffe during World War II.
