Greater London should not be confused with the City of London, because it covers a much wider area (32 London boroughs). However, most look at Greater London as being the “City”, even though this is technically incorrect.
Although the term ‘Greater London’ first started appearing more than a hundred years ago, the title was not officially used until it came into force in 1965.
In the early part of the 20th century London was the most populated city in the world, but is now in 25th place. It is also one of the most expensive cities in the world, together with Moscow and Tokyo.
The population in Greater London is estimated at around 8 million, and this number was approximately 5.5 million in 1891 (peaking at 8.6 million in 1939).
