Wooler, Northumberland – Gateway to the Cheviots

This offer has expired. The market town of Wooler is often spoke of as the "Gateway to the Cheviots". It sits on the A687 just as it starts to leave the Northumberland hills behind and head across the Millfield plain towards the border with Scotland. The area around here is known locally as Glendale and until recently this was a quiet and forgotten corner of England. Wooler itself is a busy market town. There is a good sized Coop, pharmacy, butchers and plenty of pubs and restaurants. This is where the holiday makers come to stock up on their provisions. For the tourist there is plenty of good accommodation here, from B&Bs , to holiday cottages and hotels there is a lot of choice. However the reality is that the main attraction is the surrounding countryside. To the east lie the Kyloe hills and the beautiful sandy beaches around Bamburgh. To the west you have the Cheviot hills and the Harthope Valley. To the north is the Millfield plain leading to Coldstream and Berwick upon Tweed. Southwards on the A697 and Rothbury with the lovely country estate at Cragside is only 15 miles or so away. The beauty of this land is now being discovered by increasing numbers of discerning tourists. It is also worth noting that there is a large static caravan site just to the south of Wooler. This pictures shows the centre of the town. Near by towns and villages Berwick upon tweed. Rothbury Bamburgh Article written by Mike Holly who has been looking at Cottages in Wooler
