One of the most stressful parts of booking the family holiday for me has always been what to do with our pets. We have three dogs and putting them in the kennels can be very expensive. In addition to this I do miss the dogs when we are away for long periods and would sometimes prefer their cheerful company over my husband's!
Holidaying with Your Dog
This year I decided to look for holidays which would allow us to include our dogs. This would mean we could all go away as a family and I wouldn't have to worry about the expense and hassle of finding kennel accommodation for the dogs whilst we were away. After a little online research I was amazed to discover just how many hotels, holiday cottages and B&B’s allow guests to bring their pets. There was a huge selection of pet friendly cottages in Devon alone and these offered some great rates in the off-season period.
It seems that the UK is one of the most pet-friendly holiday destinations in the world and lots of people do go away with their dogs. I did look into holidays abroad with pets as well. This is possible but you do need to get pet passports and this involves some vaccinations for your dogs. However I realised that one of our dogs was a bit too old for all the stress and hassle of vaccinations and overseas travel.
Getting Away from it in the UK
The great thing though is that the UK has some wonderful destinations for a family holiday. Pet friendly cottages in Devon were my first choice as I love this county with its miles of beautiful coastlines and rolling green landscapes. There are so many places to go walking with dogs in Devon from the rugged moors of Dartmoor through to the sandy coastlines of South Devon.
If you are thinking about holidaying with your dog then I can highly recommend pet friendly cottages in Devon. This is the perfect destination for a holiday or short break with pets. Not only are there many stunning walks but there are also lots of pubs, cafes and attractions that welcome dogs. This means you can have a great day out with all the family including your pets.
Here are a few of my tops tips if you are considering booking pet friendly cottages in Devon for your next holiday.
1. Don’t forget to Pick Up Dog Litter
There are some very strict laws about dog litter in the UK. Don’t forget these just because you are relaxing on holiday. Make sure you take some sturdy small plastic bags with you when you are out and about so that you can pick up any dog litter from your pets. You may also need to pick up dog litter from the garden or grounds when staying in pet friendly cottages in Devon.
2. Pet Diet
If your pet is a fussy eater then pack some of their regular food with you when you go on your holiday in pet friendly cottages in Devon. This will save you the trouble of hunting around for the right food when you have arrived. Also don’t forget to take some pet food with you when going on long walks or day trips. Don’t be tempted to feed your dog too many treats just because you are on holiday. Try and stick to the normal feeding routine as this will help them to settle in to their new surroundings.
3. Consider the Weather
Some breeds of dog are not built to handle very cold weather. If you are going away in the colder months then do make sure you pack warm bedding for them. You can also buy dog coats which provide additional protection when out and about in cold weather. This is a good idea if you are planning long walks or trips out on colder days.
