The town of Caerphilly hosts its Big Cheese Festival for the fifteenth time this year on the weekend of the 27th August. Featuring living history, with demonstrations of fighting from Roman gladiatorial style, through the early middle ages- 9th and 10th century when England was under the influence of Saxon and Viking cultures, modern medieval with the armoured Knights of Longshank and The Marcher Stuarts depicting life in the 17th century along the borders at the time of the Civil War. There is a chance to learn new skills with Squire Training, longbow archery and demonstrations and talks about potion making and falconry. Visits the camps to see how the soldiers lived on the march with cooking and equipment displays and their followers. There are magic shows, comedians and circus acts to amaze and bewilder you. Music performances from traditonal folk to punk and rock. A Tommy Cooper Tribute, who can forget that whole family favourite funny man. As you walk around the festival you will see stilt walkers, puppeteers, street magicians all depicting welsh traditions. And if you start to feel a bit peckish then head for the Food and Cheese Market for traditional Welsh cheeses, welsh cakes, Barn Brith, sausages.  There are numerous stalls with mouthwatering names like Wessex Pantry Ltd, The Original Welsh Oggie/Pie Company, Sushi Day(don't think that's Welsh mind you), and Blaengawney Cider selling a wide variety of food and drink. If it's culture you are after then head into the castle's apartments where the Caerphilly County Youth Theatre will perform a show they created featuring Shakespeare's ghosts from various plays sitting around a banqueting table in a piece of experimental theatre. Visit the craft marquee for Love Spoons, spinning, wood turning, and other local craftsman. Or create some craft of your own in The Textile workshop with Becky Adams or The Banner Making Workshop with Kate Gander or a Ceramics Workshop with Jo Clifford working with self hardening clay so you can take your pieces home with you. There is also a large funfair and a substran exhibition encouraging you to make the most of the local countryside with a MBT bike track and cycle repair shop. Meet some owls, see the pedal powered smoothie maker and see some antique bicycles from the Cycle Museum.  Local charity groups will also have stalls selling items and promoting their work. The festival aims to showcase all the best of being Welsh from it's history and traditions to its produce. So for a packed day out with lots to see and do celebrating the best of Wales and all it has to offer why not head on down to The Big Cheese, have a great time and bring a bit of Wales back home with you.
