With the 2012 Olympics to look forward to and planning for the big event currently in full swing, next year is set to be a big one for London, but it seems many UK and international travellers are keen to start the party early. A TripAdvisor poll on the favourite city destinations has seen London push Edinburgh into second place for UK city breaks this year. The great capitals of Scotland and England are well used to the ongoing battle for the enduring affections of UK staycationers looking for culture, history and entertainment and it seems the royal wedding has tipped the edge in favour of London this time round.
There is further good news for London compared with the cities of continental Europe, beaten into third place by only Paris and Rome as voted by international travellers. Olympic organisers are hopeful that the city takes the top spot by the time the games come around and this is looking increasingly likely. There is stiffer competition from the great global cities such a New York and Sydney but London still sits comfortably in the top 10 destinations in the world and ahead of such leading lights as Barcelona and Hong Kong.
Back in the UK, the capital faces competition too, not just from Edinburgh but other top choices for a city break such as Bath, Cambridge, Oxford and York. What these cities have in common, is some of the great cultural history for which the UK is so renowned and with others in the top 10 such as Stratford-upon-Avon, it is clear that staying in the UK for a holiday means celebrating the great heritage and history of the nation. It is fitting then that the capital provides a stage for the grandest and greatest occasion, whether that is a royal wedding or the greatest sporting event in the world.
