One of the biggest money spinning events of the year, the total purse for the three days is over £2.5 million. The Grand National day itself will have a total fund of £975k. The first prize will be £547k and new to this year will be prizes for 9th and 10th places of £1950 and £975 respectively.
An interesting fact which is often highlighted by this event is the number of women who tend to bet over this period. Figures released from 2011 suggest that women’s gambling activity increases significantly at this time with statistics of 49% of punters being female. In fact between 2010 and 2011 the percentage of women betting had increased by 12% compared to a decline in men by the same percentage. This is one occasion where the heat will truly be off the guys as betting on the National is widely considered acceptable. It’s a tradition which shows no sign of changing anytime soon.
